New Wineskin

“Nor do people pour new wine into old wineskins. If they do, the skins will burst; the wine will spill, and the wineskins will be ruined. But new wine must be poured into new wineskins, and both are preserved.” Matthew 9:17

We are living in a new spiritual season. God remains the same, but His work continues to move forward, and with it, He invites us to grow, mature, and prepare ourselves for what He desires to pour out.

God desires to pour out new wine a fresh work of His Spirit, a new measure of grace, authority, revelation, and fruit. But to receive it, we need new wineskins. This requires a willingness to let go, to surrender, and to allow Him to transform us.

In biblical times, a wineskin was a container made of leather used to hold wine. When the wine was new, it continued to ferment, producing gases that caused the wineskin to stretch. A new wineskin, being flexible, could expand without tearing.

But an old wineskin, with leather dried out and hardened over time, no longer had the ability to stretch. When new wine was poured into it, the leather could not withstand the pressure, it burst, the wine spilled, and everything was lost.

Jesus used this image to teach us a deep spiritual truth. This is what happens to us as well.

Just as an old wineskin cannot hold new wine, we cannot receive what God is doing anew if we remain clinging to the old. A hardened heart, old ways of thinking, structures that no longer give life, unhealed wounds, or fear of change make us like that stiff, hardened leather.

God wants to pour out new wine, but if we do not allow Him to change the wineskin, what He desires to do breaks, stagnates, or is lost.

Changing the wineskin is a decision. In this new season, God invites us to honestly examine our hearts and allow Him to deal with whatever no longer builds or gives life. He calls us to let go of the old, to surrender what has become rigid, and to allow His Spirit to restore flexibility to our hearts.

This is not merely about making external adjustments, but about allowing an internal transformation. For what is not surrendered eventually breaks, and what does not change cannot sustain the new things God desires to pour out.

A new wineskin does not mean discarding everything, but allowing God to renew our inner life, heal, restore, and prepare our hearts, our families, and our leadership for what is ahead.

This new season is not only about receiving something new from God, but about becoming people who are able to sustain it. The Father does not change, but we are called to grow, to surrender, and to be transformed.

God continues to pour out new wine, but He is looking for new wineskins, humble, flexible, and willing hearts. Not perfect wineskins, but surrendered ones. Not lives clinging to the past, but hearts open to His present move.

Today, the Lord invites us to examine ourselves, to release what has already fulfilled its purpose, and to allow Him to renew our inner being. For when the wineskin is new, the wine is not lost it is preserved, multiplied, and brings life.

May we be able to say in this season:“Lord, make us new wineskins for all that You desire to pour out.”
