A Time to Sow into the Hearts of Our Children

Ecclesiastes 3:1 – “There is a time for everything, and a season for every activity under the heavens.”
Life moves quickly, and every stage of our children’s lives has a unique time that does not return. As parents, we often focus on providing materially, but Scripture reminds us that Christ has called us to shepherd the hearts of our children, not just to provide for them.
Jesus said: “I am the good shepherd. The good shepherd lays down his life for the sheep.” (John 10:11). In the same way, investing in our children means giving our lives in time, affection, prayer, example, and consistent love.
There is a time to work, but also a time to listen.
A time to correct, but also a time to embrace.
A time to teach the Word, and a time to simply enjoy being together.
If we only give material things, we run the risk of raising children who are full on the outside but empty within. But when we fill their emotional and spiritual tanks with the presence of Christ in the home, we prepare them to one day take flight with confidence, knowing who they are and where they are going.
Reflection Questions
1. Am I spending more time providing material needs than sowing into the hearts and emotions of my children?
2. If my children had to describe how they feel with me, would they say they feel loved, heard, and guided in Christ?
Practical Guide to Begin Today
Evaluate your schedule: set aside a daily moment (even 15–20 minutes) exclusively for your children without distractions.
Small intentional gestures: a word of affirmation, a strong hug, a prayer together before bed.
Create memories: plan a weekly moment that is just for you and your children (a walk, cooking together, reading the Bible).
Talk about Christ naturally: not only in devotionals, but in everyday conversations, showing how Jesus is part of daily life.
Ask for forgiveness when you fail: this teaches humility and shows them that in Christ there is always grace and restoration.
Remember: time goes by quickly, but in Christ we have the opportunity to make eternal what we sow in our children.
