Counting Our Blessings

“You are my God, and I will give thanks to you; you are my God; I will extol you. Oh give thanks to the Lord, for he is good; for his steadfast love endures forever.”

Psalm 118:28–29 (ESV)

The psalmist reminds us that praise is born out of recognizing who God is and His constant goodness. He is our God, and when we lift our voices in gratitude, we acknowledge His faithfulness in every step of our journey.

As we prepare for Thanksgiving, gathering with family and friends, we are invited to pause, look back, and recognize God’s faithfulness. We live so fast that we often overlook the traces of His love in the small details of each day. But when we take time to reflect and give thanks, something powerful happens our hearts align with who He is.

Gratitude does not necessarily change our circumstances, but it transforms our hearts within them. It teaches us to see the hand of God working even in the small things, in what we don’t understand, or what seems insignificant. Giving thanks in all things does not mean ignoring pain or trials; it means acknowledging that God is still good, that He has not left us, and that His purpose remains firm.

A. W. Tozer once said:

“Gratitude is not just a reaction to receiving something good; it is a posture of the heart that recognizes that everything comes from God.”

These words remind us that gratitude goes beyond a fleeting feeling; it is a way of life that recognizes God’s sovereignty and goodness at all times. It is a posture of the heart, not of circumstances.

If we return to Psalm 118, it says: “You are my God, and I will give thanks to you.”That declaration does not depend on circumstances but on the unchanging character of God. He is always worthy of praise. That is why today I invite you to count your blessings:

  1. Write down three things you are thankful for this year.

  2. Remember the moments when God sustained you when you didn’t know how to go on.

  3. Think of the people He has placed in your path to love you, correct you, or strengthen you those mentors and helping hands.

Each detail is an expression of His love. And when we recognize these blessings, our hearts overflow with joy and worship.

“Through him then let us continually offer up a sacrifice of praise to God, that is, the fruit of lips that acknowledge his name.” Hebrews 13:15 (ESV)

True gratitude is not limited to words or special moments of the year; it becomes a way of life. Hebrews reminds us that praise is a continual sacrifice, a daily expression of love toward God. To give thanks is to worship.

Every time we give thanks, we are offering the Father a fragrance of praise that rises like incense before His presence.

A grateful heart does not wait for perfect circumstances, because it knows the perfect God who holds all things together. Thus, our words become a living testimony, an offering that confesses His name and reflects His goodness.

May each day be an opportunity to lift up a song of gratitude before His throne.
